France is introducing a so-called eco tax (éco-taxe) for trucks with a gross vehical weight over 3,5 t for their use of federal (RN) and country (RD) roads. This new tax will be levied on a total of 15'000 km of federal and country roads as well as free highways. So far, only highways have been toll roads. Except from this new tax will be emergency, agricultural and military vehicles.
The eco tax will be tested as of April 2013 for trucks with a gross vehical weight over 12 t in the Alsace. From 1st July, 2013, it will come into effect all over the country and for all vehicles with a gross weight over 3,5 t.
